How We Made This

This film is part of a campaign of public service announcements that I produced for the PRO CHOICE EDUCATION PROJECT, based out of New York. The intention was to illustrate the realities of what it means for both women and physicians when abortion is illegal. In this film we interviewed the head of a women's rights organization who gives the legal and political background on abortion in Mexico and intercut with this is an illegal procedure that we filmed at a private clinic.
As the narrator tells us, it is only in the best case scenario that women with money are able to go to physicians like the one in the film who will essentially perform an abortion under the auspices of there being complications with the pregnancy that necessitate such an operation for the sake of the mother, but finding a doctor who is willing to risk both his profession and jail time to do such a thing is costly. What is more common is for women to resort to far more unsanitary and dangerous methods of aborting unwanted pregnancies, often on their own, and this accounts for a great number of deaths.
