How We Made This Segment

Capoeira Angola Center is a haven in the Crenshaw community-- a place where young men and women can go to learn about the ancient African born and Brazilian cultivated martial art of Capoeira Angola. Omoade E. Neff of the Capoeira Angola Center (www.angolacenterla.com) makes it his mission to not only teach these students an art form that is part of their roots, he infuses lessons of respect to elders and value of community. His classes draw a wonderful mix of students from different cultural and demographic backgrounds-- they convene in a historic old firehouse to study Capoeira Angola. You can learn more about this cultural art during the Capoeira Angola International Conference at Rogers Park in Inglewood, California, October 5-8. Check www.angolacenterla.com for details. There will be a free youth camp October 6 & 7th! And if you enjoyed the music, check back on the site for their recorded album of Capoeira songs.

Capoeira Angola LA was shot with a Sony HVR-A1U camera provided by SmogTV's sponsor, Band Pro. Special thank you to my trusty shooter and compadre, Arturo Toledo. In addition, I'd like to thank my Brave New Films colleague, Lissette Roldan, for helping me polish the audio edit of my latest SmogTV creation! All told, cost for this production was a meal for Arturo and I -- for about $22. This piece was proudly edited and directed by me, Jamiah Adams.
